The Greenspace team is running a number of Forest School taster programmes this autumn with groups in Wester Hailes and Sighthill and I just wanted to share some of the pictures with you. This programme of work has been funded by Forestry Commission Scotland and is a wonderful way to enage children with the outdoors.
We have two fully trained and experienced Forest Schools Practitioners on our staff, with another experienced staff member trained to Stage 2 level and we work with schools and other organisations around the city and beyond to deliver Forest School taster sessions, to encourage teachers to find out more about the programme, make more and better use of nearby woodlands as outdoor classroom resources and even to undertake the Forest Schools training themselves.
Forest Schools is not just about environmental education; it also helps children to become more self confident, independent and self aware; to improve their social and communications skills and to empathise with others. It can benefit all participating children, but can have a particularly positive impact on children who struggle in the usual classroom setting and teachers often report that these children show improved behaviour back in the classroom too, as a result of Forest Schools.
We’ll be delivering Forest Schools activities right up to Christmas, with more following in the New Year, and will be looking for funding to develop new programmes next year.
