Rush Hour: horses and cyclists in the Water of Leith

The Colinton and Craiglockhart Dells was a busy place to be last night. As I entered Easter Hailes Gate (or as the locals call it, “Henry’s Tunnel”, after the Thomas the Tank Engine character) I could hear the clip-clop of a horse coming through the tunnel towards me. I stopped just inside the tunnel to let the horse and rider past. The last thing I wanted to do was spook the horse!

The real spectacle (as this picture hopefully captures) was the coincidence of the horse leaving the tunnel as a twenty-strong group of CTC cyclists entered it, going in the opposite direction! I can report they all passed safely and without incident, whilst I held my breath.

I chatted to some of the CTC riders and asked what the ride was all about. It seems to be a weekly ride, and takes in various routes in and around Edinburgh. The major focus last night seemed to be on the pub in Balerno!

(P.S. I have decided to re-name Balerno the “Innertube Pink Line Terminus”. Catchy, no?)
